Masonry Sand and Aggregates
Much of the natural sand aggregate mined in the United States is processed into two main product categories: concrete sand and masonry sand. When combined with cement, masonry sand from Lakeside Ready Mix is ideal for grouting, guniting, brick or laying block. Processed from 100% natural brown sand, this material is the first choice of masons and bricklayers.
Sand is the largest component of mortar and the material that gives mortar its distinctive color, texture and cohesiveness. Sand must be free of impurities, such as salts or clay.
Lakeside Ready Mix offers high quality natural or crushed, washed and unwashed sand and gravel products to meet varied construction project needs.
There are three basic kinds of commercial sand:
? Fill Sand: utility sand, coarse, not washed, commonly used underneath paving stones. This sand is for general use and in pool bottoms. Other applications include use in roads, and as an inexpensive fill which allows vegetation growth.
? Plaster Sand: clean, coarse sand, primarily used by professionals to make stucco.
? Masonry or White Sand: Clean, fine-grained sand used to make mortar. Masonry sand is often requested to use as a base under paving stones because it is easier to work with than utility sand. It is also used for ready mix concrete, manufacturing of concrete blocks, grouting and the manufacturing of bituminous concrete
Masonry sand can also be used as an excellent absorbent and cushioning layer in dog kennels and horse stalls. As a leveling base under patio blocks and pavers, dry masonry sand provides flexible, yet firm support. It can also be economical as ice control for large areas. Used as an additive for plant soil mixtures, it will not settle or pack. Dry masonry sand will not lump or freeze, making it ideal for winter masonry work.
